In our everyday life, we react to environmental influences with head movements, emotions and gestures, mostly without thinking about it. But how exactly does this movement influence us while driving? The Vienna-based startup Emotion3D deals with exactly this topic and grants an insight into their project and the collaboration with the startup initiative of AVL – Creators Expedition.
Coming from the image processing industry, the founders of emotion3D recognized that machine learning is key to solving fundamental problems in that sector. Thus, they made it their goal to solve this problem and developed a real-time 3D scene analysis software solution for automotive, consumer and industrial applications.
Due to a strong feedback from automotive industry, the emotion3D team decided to enter this market from the early beginning. By focusing on the vehicle’s interior, the application has a unique selling point. Additionally, there is also a proposal for EU directives for the interior that would push the startup further.
The application uses cameras perceiving head position, gestures and emotions of the driver. The obtained information is combined with algorithms and attention analysis – allowing to recognize at any time whether the driver is holding a smartphone, is distracted or setting actions in the event of a critical situation (e.g. driver drowsiness/tiredness or inattention). As emotion3D has specialized in software, the hardware is purchased, using standard sensors or cameras with 2D or 3D technology, forming a symbiosis for a wide range of use-cases.
Through the Mobility Pioneers Event, emotion3D became aware of the AVL Startup Initiative and applied for the program – hoping to determine whether there is a need for the startup’s application at all and what experts think about their software. The feedback was very positive, and the cooperation has an added value for both sides. "It's a great opportunity for us to work together with a leading technology company like AVL and to learn and profit from their structures and possibilities", said CTO Michael Hödlmoser.
After successfully completing the current project, the next steps for emotion3D are to go into pre-series production in the automotive industry, and furthermore, deepening the activities with AVL.
"I can highly recommend applying for the Startup-Initiative Creators Expedition, because you get a perfect insight into the structures of a big corporation and also get great feedback from other experts!"
