Yes, you read it right! Within this project, CREATORS EXPDITION, the independent startup initiative from AVL teamed up with SKYTREE, a startup from Amsterdam to develop something, that will make cars of the future not only more energy efficient, but also decreases the level of air- pollution! SKYTREE provides a filter-solution that has only been used in space stations until now. This solution makes it possible to filter CO2 out of the interior of vehicles in a particularly energy- saving way. Together with AVL as a strong partner that is deeply rooted in the automotive industry worldwide, the startup’s solution will be commercialized to the multi-billion-dollar automotive market which provides independent market access for SKYTREE, the best possible products for AVL’s customers and a healthier environment for all of us.
Being ex-ESA (European Space Agency) members, the founders of SKYTREE bring deep know- how about air-filter systems into the cooperation. AVL, on the other hand with its long-year market leadership in terms of innovation, technological ingenuity and a broad network of partners provides leading engineering services for innovative solutions in the automotive industry. When combining these two, a win-win situation arises, which is the main goal of the CREATORS EXPEDITION.
In comparison to traditional air-conditioning systems like the open and the closed system that rather have pros but also cons in terms of air quality, environmental pollution and energy consumption, the new solution of AVL and the startup combines the advantages of those traditional systems in a perfect way: Special filters within the AC recycle the air inside the car in an energy-saving way. Additionally, outside pollutants can be minimized which leads to an increase in the cars range. Energy usage levels, CO2 levels and outside pollutants can be hold down, which is the optimal solution for such a system.
The CREATORS EXPEDITION team met SKYTREE at the Mobility Pioneers Event in Munich. After some short discussions, a fit was found fast and in July 2018, the project started.
In a simulation phase, the new system has been tested against existing ones to check if the solution that has only been working in space stations until now, works within cars on earth too. Thus, a prototype has been installed in one of AVL’s test-cars and the results was presented to the general management in December 2018. The project was a success and SKYTREE and AVL plan to develop a conjoint sales-strategy and serve the markets together as reliable business- partners.
