CREATORS EXPIDITION, the independent start-up initiative from AVL created an exclusive partnership with Skytree to make cars of the future more energy efficient and provide cleaner cabin air. Skytree is a start-up from Amsterdam, and spin out of the European Space Agency, that provides filter solutions which until now have only been available for space stations and submarines. This solution filters CO2 out of the interior of vehicles in a way that also saves energy; which is particularly useful for electric vehicles. As a business deeply rooted in the automotive industry worldwide, AVL is the ideal partner to commercialise Skytree’s solution for the multi-billion-dollar automotive market. This partnership will provide independent market access for the start-up, the best possible products for AVL’s customers and a healthier environment for all of us. The founders of Skytree bring a deep understanding about air-filter systems into this collaboration. AVL with its decades of market leadership in terms of innovation, technological ingenuity and a broad network of partners provides leading engineering services for innovative solutions in the automotive industry. Combining these creates a win-win situation which is the main goal of the CREATORS EXPEDITION. Traditional air-conditioning systems have advantages and disadvantages in terms of air quality, environmental pollution and energy consumption. The new solution offered by AVL and Skytree combines all the benefits of the traditional systems, with none of the downsides. Special filters within the AC unit recycle the air inside the car in an energy-saving way and minimises outside pollutants entering the vehicle. After the CREATORS EXPEDITION team and Skytree met at the Mobility Pioneers Event in Munich, it was quickly established there was a great fit, and in July 2018 the project started. A prototype system has been trailed in one of AVL’s test cars to check if the solution, that has only been working in space stations and submarines until now, works within vehicles on dry land. The test project was a success, and after presenting the results to AVL general management in December 2018, Skytree and AVL are develop a strategy to serve the markets together as reliable business partners.
